You need to get the whole dominance and alpha idea out of your head. Dogs really don't work like that, no matter what certain TV "dog trainers" say

Thank you for all the advice, I have had my husband doing all of those things and it seems to be helping a lot! He is working with him when he is home from work, and I've pretty much made him the treat man. Kiba is still a little scared of him at times, but we have seen a lot of improvement in him.
We have also been watching him closely, as he will show signs when he is getting scared and DH will just walk away from him and Kiba seems to get over it very quickly. We have still had a few accidents but nothing like what it was. Thank you so much for all the advice.
I fully agree with crazydogblog when it comes to positive reinforcement/clicker training to help solve dog behavioral issues. Here's a video that you might find useful to your situation:
The vet thinks he is about a year old, still pretty young. He is an awesome dog though, so I am happy that the advice that we got is working out. He still is a little scared but I think in time and with work he will learn that my husband is not going to hurt him.
My wife and I adopted a dog with the same issues you describe with Kiba. He is a real sweet gentle boy and was totally terrified of me. Like Kiba, we don't know exactly what happened in his previous home. I did everything that crazydogblog described with the exception of the treats since Luke was a little heavy. It took some time, a couple of months for him to start trusting me. Now he follows me everywhere around the house and yard. But even now I have to be careful about raising my voice when he is near. He also understands 4 letter words which I use a lot of when I am working on the cars and keeps about a 10 foot buffer zone between him and me, when I see that I make a point of telling him he is a good boy and that I am not angry with him and ask him to come to me. I always let him come to me instead of me going up to him. I know in time Kiba and your husband will have a wonderful relationship.
I'm glad that your dog was able to be less scared of you, Kiba is doing much better after a week of my husband working with him. He is not raising his voice, giving treats and making sure he knows that he can feel safe and relaxed around him. He still has an accident here and there, but with all the advice we have been given he is doing much better.
He makes sure to tell him he is a good boy and when we see him becoming submissive, such as cowering on the ground my husband is walking away and letting him have his space. That seems to be working wonders as Kiba has time to understand that he isn't in danger and can take his time in going back around my husband. I am hoping that within a few months he won't feel as bad around him, and that with lots of work and care he will understand that he is safe in this house.
