If you need to create two piles of items, one 'Good/Functioning' and one 'Bad/Faulty' on a table, what layout do you use? Top=Good bottom=bad? or something else?
Good and Important Good and Trivial Bad and Fuck must replace Bad and who gives a shit.
The important stuff would be placed safely at the back out of the way, furthest from the door. The bad who gives a shit stuff would also be at the back too. The good trival stuff will be infront of the good important stuff. The bad must be replaced stuff willl be at the front though to remind me I have to get it sorted.
I'll usually put the functional ones in a position which indicates they could be used, and the non-functional ones in a position which indicates they can't. I'd put a non-functional stapler on its back, for example, suggesting it was dead.
How about components with uniform physical properties? Imagine uniformly coloured cubes which you perform some tests on and have to place somewhere in a restricted area.
Faulty (assuming scrap): Carelessly in a box, also within reach, that then goes for disposal.
"Within reach" generally implies left/right, with my test rig in the middle. If the items are delicate enough to need testing, I don't want to have to stretch and risk dropping one or dunking it hard enough on the table to stress it. Why yes, I *have* tested HDDs, how could you tell? :-)
If I am stuck with having to have it all on the table, i think good would be at the edge of the table nearest me and bad would be tucked away at the back.
