Well, I guess I should start like cabanasloth and say that I love it here, adding the disclaimer that any non-New England place has always given me the creeps. The weather is just too constant elsewhere to really suit me. Also, nowhere else has fall like this.

The non-housing cost of living is normal. The housing market is insane. You can afford a condo or a house on two "real" salaries, but forget it otherwise. (Our downstairs neighbor is looking to sell some time in the next 18 months, ask me for details if you're curious about specific price points.) It's not quite as bad as the Bay Area (I know nothing about the New York housing market), but that's like saying it doesn't have quite as much wet as the ocean. One huge advantage Boston has over the Bay Area is that since East Coast cities are geographically tiny, there is a fair amount of very affordable, nice housing available within a 30-minute non-rush-hour drive. There's even public transportation out to some of it. But, you can't walk to your friends' houses if you live out there. So
