I have just seen newsbits about the seed banks that are in the works, to preserve seeds against some future disaster so we could have many fine plants again. There is one for agricultural seeds and one for wild seeds

My impression is that these seed banks are not so much for the large disasters of that sort, as against the small disasters of "Nobody was planting this particular sort of corn, because the big agribusinesses were planting their homogeneous hybrids and other people didn't happen to plant any, and nobody else was making sure it got preserved."
But that's just an impression, and could be wrong. :)
