Daisuke Matsuzaka is the new pitcher for the Red Sox. He was recently acquired from the Seibu Lions in Japan. He has at least six different pitches and is pretty dominating so there's been a lot of publicity regarding his move to MLB. He's making his regular season debut today against KC.

And in Japanese the 'su' sound is often shortened so 'suki' sounds like 'ski' and Daisuke sounds like, well, Dice-K. But Jes is right, that's a pretty lame reason for a nickname. Though I have seen "K1" (1 being 'ichi') for Keiichi more than once, so maybe the Japanese just like doing that sort of thig...

I-Rod, A-Rod....Jesus.
I forget what game it was, but one of the announcers called him something like "Eeevan" which was more of a bastardization of "Evan" as opposed to "Ivan".

Ok I'm done, and tired.
