There will be a few hours before he goes home.

He can only hope Eddie started the calls and string pulling the moment they took him out of the office to the jailhouse instead of calling Margaret or Eli to keep them abreast of the situation. His mind is already working through damage control too; because tomorrow morning when the news breaks and travels through Jersey there will be a scarlet letter on his city for the liquor trade. That’s best case scenario. Worst case includes the Commodore (and he knows this is the Commodore- it has Louis’ angry and petty scrawl all over it) laying deep ratlines he will spring tomorrow morning when the businesses open. It includes them finding his books too and finding more than election fraud therein.

Nucky is fingerprinted and photographed. He gives his name and occupation in a clipped voice and is searched like so many of the thugs picked up at night for drunk and disorderly. They take from him the cufflinks and cigarette case, the bankroll and carnation (as if he means to use flowers as weapons) and is lead to a cell that gives him the benefit of privacy.

They know better than to keep him with the common throng; he is a king after all. There is at least still that.

His mind travels unbidden to Chalky and just as quickly, he dismisses the idea. Instead he wonders if Jimmy is in on this. It is such a childish impulse to wonder that but he can’t help it. Every time he begins to move past it- to work out whom to call when he’s out, what lawyer to contact for the mess that awaits him and perhaps most importantly, how he’ll strike back- like a steel trap his mind snaps back to Jimmy.

He seemed miles away at the funeral home, in the past or in guilt he didn’t know and couldn’t name then. Jimmy went away in the war and never returned, Nucky thinks and tries to ignore the small aside that this is the most thought he’s given him since the war ended; this person is a reflection of his boy. But it’s a funhouse mirror. Something was off.

He wonders if Jimmy had lost it before the war, and he just too busy to notice- like Mabel. He wonders if he can get it back. Would he want it? Or would the truth of it all just tear Jimmy apart, like it did with Mabel until he took a razor and fixed it in the way and manner he knew how.

Like a parent, shaken by a loud noise outside Nucky has the sudden urge to check on Jimmy. He wants to see what the Commodore did to him, what the war has. He wonders what his city will look like when he’s released in a few hours and there’s a part of Enoch Thompson that hates in that moment. Truly hates. He hasn’t been this powerless since he was a boy. He hasn’t felt this small in a long time.

And there’s a throbbing in his chest; an insistent child want that makes him think of Margaret, the children and home.

It’ll be hours before he gets to see them again and by then, he doesn’t know what to expect next.
