Couldn't resist....

A couple of months ago, Mark told me that a re-formed Magazine were playing in Manchester and asked if I wanted to go. I did have reservations - Magazine were the soundtrack to part of my youth, and I have spent all of my bass-playing life attempting to get something remotely like the awesome sound that Barry Adamson achieved so effortlessly. The ( Read more... )

I went to the show at Manchester too. I think you hit the nail right on the head when you said that it sounded exactly as it should.

I thought the guitarist did an excellent job - I did wonder if he was using any of John's equipment as soon as I saw the hand height controller. Also, he'd got a lot of the sounds spot on and John had a habit of rewiring things to get unique sounds. John's Vox AC30 seemed to be missing though.

It was an amazing show and I haven't felt that way at a gig for a long long time.

John McGeogh must be a very hard act to follow and I totally agree - he did a great job. Who is he anyway?

And I came out feeling like a teenager again!

I saw Magazine at the Forum in London...and they were really quite splendid. I have photos, and I'll be knocking together a review in the fullness of time, but 'really quite splendid' covers it for now.

I was rather miffed that 'Magic, Murder And The Weather' got such brusque treatment (only one song!) - that was the album upon which conventional wisdom had it that the band had gone a bit soft, but I would've liked to hear 'About The Weather' with Ipso Facto's backing vocals. That would've worked rather well, I think.

But I shouldn't quibble. It was a gig several levels above the ordinary. And it was indeed bizarre to see all those gruff, blokeish, middle-aged men getting so overwrought. On 'You Never Knew Me' one burly geezer shouldered his way to the front, and snarled the lyrics aggressively in Howard Devoto's face, pointing at him in an accusing fashion throughout. I think this was just his way of expressing his inner emotions, but the bouncers ran over and warned him off, thinking he was about to start a fight!

I'd have liked to have seen that!

When are you going to post your pictures? I'd love to see them - I tried to take a couple in my usual amateur fashion and ended up with one blurred one and one completely black one so I was hoping someone more professional would take some.

Well, I don't know if my efforts count as professional. I tend to use the 'PPP' technique: point, pray, Photoshop!

I've got a few memory cards to sort out, so it'll probably be Monday before I have any photos fit for human consumption. Then I'll shove a few in my Livejournal/MySpace blog...

Well, you're photos always seem pretty good to me! Can't wait for Monday!

Mark says did you go to the Mott the Hoople gig and if so, any pics from that?

Or you'd have to come over here?

I hope they do continue to play, although I'm not sure what individual commitments they've got.
