It isn't exactly that Henry's forgotten it's his birthday so much as he hasn't been conscious of what date it is since the last time he recorded Hyde's increasingly depraved behavior in one of his journal entries- it has occurred to him also there may be people on the Internet who think he's actually still in Syracuse. There is an absurd amount of wreckage to clean up, the first at the top of a very long list is explaining (although in not in much detail or truth, because there is definitely such a thing as too much honesty in this case) to his father where he's been for almost the last month.
Also more pragmatically if the interview he's managed to secure at Cornell works out, Albert will be transferred to a similar facility in the area. So he's spent most of his day at the hospital exploring how feasible that is (an appropriate location has been found, so now all there really is to do is wait, which ...Henry hates, and is considerably more frustrated by with Hyde's sense of now now now to contend with, but it can't be helped
( ... )
Hasibe feels him come into the room before she sees him, and she does wonder if that's something supernatural or just--being hyper-attuned to his presence, what with how obsessed they tend to be with one another. She turns away from the window and smiles at him (especially at the look on his face, because she thinks he knows what this is for now), hands clasped behind her in a gesture bordering on coquettish.
"Happy birthday," she says.
His expression makes this more than worth it, but she knew it would be. She'll tell him about the rest of the plans in a moment, but she wants to say this first, and just--let things sink in, the way they look at each other every time they've been apart for even a little while, with that feeling as though it's actually been more like months.
It's perfect because it is, as all things are with Hasi, aesthetically studied, elaborate, each detail bright and sharp and individually tailored (to him, this does not escape his notice - very little does, now, and at times in the past few days it's been almost overwhelming, something like finally getting glasses after a lifetime of subpar vision) - but not too much. He would not, she can probably guess, have reacted well to like, thirty people with those horrific plastic horn things, which ...it is possible someone has tried regarding his birthday in the past.
This is just enough, even if he would never have thought of any of it on his own. (The cake is a Rubik's cube, for the love of all things holy. Or just ...you know, one particular holy thing.)
All of this takes much less time to think than it seems, but he uses the time wisely by walking to her at the window and framing her face in his hands (he's taller by a couple of inches, now). "Thank you- how do you always know what I need before I do?"
The height difference strikes her suddenly now--usually they're sitting or...reclining together, so it isn't quite as apparent, but standing like this, even in her four inch heels, he is a bit taller, isn't he? That's interesting, but it makes a lot of sense, considering Hyde seemed to be damn near six foot three by the time he went back where he came from. She wonders what it is in the Pentex ingredients that made that happen, though she also thinks his posture is somewhat improved, so that helps. (Yes, she notices these things.)
"Paying very close attention," she answers, anyway, beaming up at him, "I'm glad you like it. We have dinner with Gabriel in about an hour and fifteen minutes, but that's plenty of time for you to open what I got you."
The second gift was more of an impulse buy, but really, she couldn't resist.

It's mostly rhetorical.
