Welcome to parenthood.. ;)

In my experience, it matter more that you are there for a child when they are awake and that you provide the necessary comforts when required, rather than when demanded.
My eldest son did not sleep through the night until he was almost 2 ..... very very stressful.

Then my wife finally found a thing called controlled crying in a book. I had mentioned this earlier and repeatedly, but as a man I am to know nothing about children. ><
The book said, as I had learned from friends and family who had children, that the children will learn from your actions, not your intent. Picture a mother who is rocking a child to sleep wishing the child did not need to be rocked to sleep...
Ensuring first that physical needs are met and that the child is safe, it is OK to let them cry as they will learn from routine of your actions rather than what you would 'wished' for them to learn.

But, it is still very very difficult to hear a child cry and fight the instinct to protect. :)

p.s. Happy Birthday

Hi Stephen!
Tim changes often and a lot. After the situation I described in the post he began to fall asleep while nursing again. At about 7 months old he, again, stopped falling asleep, but he cried very hard if we left him alone. So we adopted another method: we go to bed, all three, and wait until Tim falls asleep - by himself or when nursing. We sleep together now, this is much easier for everyone.
