Koda's necropsy

Feb 27, 2011 13:45

I got the results of Koda's postmortem exam today, while bringing Luci in for her monthly glucose check and Lupron shot. Luci's doing fine, feisty as always and even gained some weight. With Koda, it wasn't what we thought. The treatment had been controlling the tumors very well, they were tiny, if evidently strong producers of inappropriate hormones. There wasn't much evidence of metaststasis. However, her immune system had collapsed and multiple organs were failing. She had pneumonia, liver and gall bladder disease, pancreatic disease that was attacking other organs, her intestines weren't processing food... The treatment may have contributed to that too, but without it she just would've died in a hypoglycemic coma sooner. There still was no hope for her, but she didn't die of what we thought at the time.
