I'm currently sitting in a training where the speaker talked about the challenge of losing the "best and brightest" engineering-bound HS seniors to a handful of engineering schools... MIT, UCSD, Harvey Mudd... :-)
It sounds like a complaint on the part of the speaker; like these schools are a thorn in his side. Is the speaker making an argument for distributing the "best and brightest" around the country?
Anyway, being a part of something big enough to be so annoying, makes you feel kind of nice inside.
Don't you know the theory of trickle-down intelligence? Where intelligent students, by their mere presence, cause those around them to be more intelligent and scholarly?
At any rate, many of my teachers seemed to have held that theory.
My guilt that I didn't go to my local state university, I assure you, crushes me every day.
Oddly enough, I couldn't find any info on the web about trickle-down intelligence. Most usages of "trickle-down" seem to be in reference to economics and intelligence gathering. So I don't feign to know what it's about.
Even so, I'd be concerned that "best and the brightest” might be brought down at the same time the less so are brought up. At very least, it seems small groups are optimal for this type of framework.
