It's a negative on the two houses we drove by today.
The older house had some improvements, but it really looked like someone trying to put rouge on an 100 year old sun-bather. The front and one side of the house had new siding, but the other side was old wood. The eaves showed bare wood and were lacking 2 by 4s in some key locations. The deck was brand new, but the yard was full of weeds (what yard hadn't been covered by concrete). There were wires entering and exiting the home making me think there was not much room between the siding and the drywall (codeword: no insulation). It looked like it had been a fixer-upper for a long time with each new owner changing a little here and a little there.
The 1970s house might have been a fine home, but while Andy was getting out to grab a flyer a bunch of skater-punk kids hanging out at the school across the street yelled a derisive, foul-mouthed comment about Jews. Andy and I immediately decided it was a no-go. We have both been teachers and don't want to deal with that in our free-time.
I'm actually feeling pretty good about that. It turns out once the decision is made it is easier. Now I can go back to studying. :)
