Update about cohousing

So, we just got back from our first meeting of the cohousing group. It was, as expected, a very welcoming environment. It is hard to say objectively what I think, but if you want a gut feeling, it was wonderful. There were approximately 25 people there representing most of their membership. It was so friendly and I really liked the people I met ( Read more... )

I have no strong views on the breastfeeding thing. I'm just curious how you made your choices, since you comment that they're not the norm. Have you decided when you will "cut him off"?

P.S. Good luck with the cohousing group! It sounds awesome.

I am curious about this as well.
My mom says kids tend to wean themselves. You can wean them earlier if you choose to but usually kids will let you know when they are ready to move on to exclusively other things. For my brother that was between 13 months and 18 months(I don't remember exactly). I tried to wean when I was 4 months but I wasn't allowed anything else so that didn't work. I still weaned myself by 9 months.
I also recently learned that I drank goat's milk, not cow's milk when I was a little kid. That might explain my love for goat's milk cheese above all other cheeses. (Not relevant to the discussion but interesting to me.)

Here's one person's opinion on how and when children wean:

The basic idea is that it's not just the kid who decides, that the parents and culture have a lot to do with it, even if they don't realize it. At some point, the kid does grow out of nursing, but not until much much later than a year old, maybe somewhere around 5 years old (which I've heard is the global mean age for weaning).

My brother and sister self-weaned, and they both nursed till they were 5-6 years old.

Wow, the cohousing group sounds neat. I hope things go well for you with it. Now that I have my own munchkin, I can certainly appreciate how important having living space is! Hopefully that isn't the deal-breaker for you guys.

That is so cool!! :) I hope you go with them, it would be so nice to have other families around with shared goals and whatnot. **Excitement** :)
