So, we just got back from our first meeting of the cohousing group. It was, as expected, a very welcoming environment. It is hard to say objectively what I think, but if you want a gut feeling, it was wonderful. There were approximately 25 people there representing most of their membership. My mom says kids tend to wean themselves. You can wean them earlier if you choose to but usually kids will let you know when they are ready to move on to exclusively other things. For my brother that was between 13 months and 18 months(I don't remember exactly). I tried to wean when I was 4 months but I wasn't allowed anything else so that didn't work. I still weaned myself by 9 months.
I also recently learned that I drank goat's milk, not cow's milk when I was a little kid. That might explain my love for goat's milk cheese above all other cheeses. (Not relevant to the discussion but interesting to me.)

The basic idea is that it's not just the kid who decides, that the parents and culture have a lot to do with it, even if they don't realize it. At some point, the kid does grow out of nursing, but not until much much later than a year old, maybe somewhere around 5 years old (which I've heard is the global mean age for weaning).
