Chapter Six: My Christmas List Turns Naughty

Dec 13, 2010 18:24

[ The thing is, talking about spies had gotten me thinking about the spy in our army last summer, and now I had an idea to scoop up some badly needed information. If I could get a bug - or four - in the Smith house, we might be able to stay ahead in the game. My plan was pretty simple: get everyone in the family a present, stick some sort of ( Read more... )

I am brilliant with machinery of all kinds. What were you thinking of?

One, still interested in a sword, and two, some sort of recorder or radio.

Ask for someone who can specifically forge over the phones. I know someone is building one. Much as I hate to admit, I can't do everything.

A recording device shouldn't be that difficult to piece together. How small does it need to be?

Forges. Right. [ From arts and crafts sessions at camp, I knew how to not light myself on fire while someone was smithing sharp objects. With any luck, I'd be able to help out a few weekends in exchange for a new sword. It was a good thing I didn't care about passing classes. ]

Small enough to hide in a stuffed animal. If you can make it small enough to stick in a watch, even better.

[Oh look what she's brought: One of the innumerable, saccharine stuffed animals that came with her room. She had quickly put them into the closet, having filled the space with the mystery books she'd been lent instead. Also there was a needle and thread and a small pair of sewing scissors.]

Hello Mr. Jackson. What are you planning on hiding in it?

Woah, woah, I don't have it yet. I'm no good with tiny fiddly stuff.

[Curiosity had torn her out of her kitchen, more than anything else. She brings along a long necklace with large beads.]

Last minute Christmas shopping?

Gotta find something good for the Smiths.

I could probably whip up something decently electronic.

You want to work with the other guy? [ a thumb in Dist's direction ]

I'm looking for bugs small enough to fit in Christmas presents to the Smiths. It would be nice if they could transmit back to something, but if I have to break in and steal the recorders later, well, I can handle that too.

Depends on his methods.

A radio transmitter should be pretty simple, even with the limited technology there, very nice and basic things they are. I haven't been able to get radio signals to transmit outside this town, but inside should be a much easier task.

Okay, I know nothing about radios besides "I don't like NPR," so I don't know how to answer that.

[Carrying a small box, probably fitting of jewelry or some other accessory. She's got other errands to run, but this wasn't out of the way, so why not.] That was an extensive list. May I ask to whom you're thinking of getting all this for?

[She walks up to him and gives him the box.]

There's a watch and a pair of pearl earrings in this. I found those going through the house the other day. My 'husband' here and I don't need them, so you can have those. ...I do have another suggestion for a gift though, if you're looking for something to give to miss Jane Smith.
