Not sure how much you watch the behind-the-scenes style materials, but the crowded TARDIS is partially a fall out between JNT's plans to focus on the Doctor and Tegan and Davidson's concept of the Doctor as being best served with Nyssa as a companion. As I see it, Davidson took the Fifth Doctor as something of a "Hopeful Young Scientist", idealistic but occasionally petulant, and overall romantically minded in his travels (see Davidson's handling in Caves of Androzani for an example of him at the top of his game and most Doctory). JNT seemed to want something of a young, intelligent Arthur Dent type. So in Davidson's view, Nyssa becomes a bit of a girl wonder while in JNT, we get Tegan as something of a riff on the spouse to a slightly browbeaten Brit
