It's funny... I actually met my husband that way nine years ago. I think it was Yahoo's dating service. I'd never done anything like it before, but I didn't really know anyone and wanted someone to talk to. I had a few back-and-forth messages with some assholes, had one date with a guy who had seemed nice but ended up just being desperate to get into my pants (didn't happen), and another date with a guy who had been very funny in his messages and then in a few phone conversations, but on an actual date was so painfully awkward that he didn't even seem to be capable of ordering his dinner. He was nice... it just wasn't happening. My husband was one of the guys I'd been talking to back and forth, and the nice thing was that I didn't feel like I had to be "cute" or funny or anything with him... he just wanted someone to talk to and so did I. When we started talking on the phone it was just... easy. Very easy. And our first date ended up lasting forever because we kept trying to think of other things to go and do so it wouldn't have to be

Thanks for sharing your experience with online dating. Sometimes it's nice to hear about people it's worked for. I completely agree with how you characterize love and compatibility, and I definitely think that online dating can certainly be just one more venue (and sometimes a preferable one) to increasing the odds of meeting compatible people.

I suspect that my reservations say something more about me than online dating in general, which is probably all the more reason to throw in the towel for awhile.
