Funny you should mention that - I keep company with a shih tzu named Gizmo, after the famous mogwai. He and Arthur get along well.

one time, we went out to eat at a chinese restaurant. the woman that served us told Erika , "i'm behind you" in a whisper close to her ear. we laugh about it now, but at the time
we were all very scared.

Laugh? How could you? She was revealing herself in the way that only a stranger can, in the earnestness and primordial force of her selfhood. It is as though she had answered the ancient demand, "legete, phainomena!" with the positive reply, "dokei moi legein!" What could be more obvious than that this woman understood the impulse of the arcane world? What could be more clear than that you must give her a hug and a dollar? Legete!

PS: Rascists say that Chinese people don't count. Rascists also say that Chinese people count very, very well.

I'm afraid science disagrees with you here - the simple fact is that horses do not count. They might fool you into believing that they do, but that's just because they can detect subtleties in human facial expressions that most people can't. That's why I don't trust horses, and it's also why you shouldn't either.

P.S. - If we went back in time, we would find that dodo birds count. They were counting on going extinct. And then they did.
