Great! Am utterly clueless on icon making! I've downloaded Gimp and am dying to come to grips with it! If I can block me-time tomorrow, thats what is going to happen.
I do have a dumb question though -- just how do you layer your copies on top of each other? Do you drag them into place or do you give a command?
I've a question if you don't mind. Where did you download version 2.2? I've been looking but I can only find the more recent ones. Great tutorial, by the way!
You may want to try looking at others' comments to see if it hasn't been posted yet. You could try this and hopefully it'll work for you. The first bolded text is to change the mode, opacity, to see all your layers, etc. The second bolded text is to duplicate layers, which I may use quite often in, not only for the GIMP, my tutorials.
Hope this helps! Feel free to ask any more questions. I'll be happy to answer them (:

Once you make a new layer, go to Dialogs->Create New Dock->Layers, Channels & Paths. Then click on the tab closest to the left.
There you can change the opacity, modes, see all your layers.
To duplicate a layer in GIMP, go to Layer->Duplicate Layer or to make a new layer, go to Layer->New Layer.
