I think the sequence was meant to illustrate the cliche of "you don't know what you've got until it's gone."
How many times do we all get into a situation where we appreciate something when we don't have it. And then when we get it back, we might appreciate it at first, but slowly we go back to forgetting how much we appreciate it.
Does that make sense?
So it's nothing to be depressed over. It should make you think about what you have, and what it would be like to not have it, so that you will appreciate what you have. It's a happy series of comics!
I think Jim Davis just did them for the reason he was quoted on that Wikipedia entry. He was just doing something different, something to scare people.
