Being alone is terrifying, but it is the key to shaking off the overwhelming need to constantly check yourself against the judgement of others. I'm not talking about constant isolation, just spending time alone in general, especially if used for constructive introspection and development. And it's tough, really tough. I've read a lot on meditation. Not a lot as in "I'm intimately familiar with it," but a lot as in "how the fuck do I do this?" And most of the more convincing articles I've read say you should think of a question. Think about something. And just think about it. Intimately. The idea is not to clear your mind, but to focus it, and thus clear away the excess.

Do you meditate often, and if so, what about?

I ask because it seems to coincide with what you are saying. That it is something perhaps just happening for you, rather than something you are necessarily trying for.

I often find that when I'm lost in thought about myself, I feel empowered. I want to go out into the world and showcase me. But I feel torn down. What is it that helps you stay strong in yourself?

Well, I've been going through a lot of emotional stress, I guess you could say, and I felt like my only option was meditation. I bought a book called "Going To Pieces Without Falling Apart" by Mark Epstein, who is a psychotherapist employing Buddhist techniques in his field. The book was a little confusing, but it helped open me up to meditation practices and ideas that have helped heal me emotionally and jump-start my own meditation ( ... )
