Personality: As his namesake implies, Cookie Monster has an insatiable passion for cookies, namely eating them. He has the tendency to appear wherever there are cookies, even at the mere mention of them, and he is known for devouring them in seconds, scattering crumbs in his wake. Cookie Monster does not discriminate what he puts in his stomach; if there are no cookies to be found, he has no trouble eating other objects, even telephones, typewriters, or a Ford F-250 pickup truck, along with multiple numbers, letters, and shapes. It is easy to tell when he is approaching because you can hear him humming, "Dummm-de-dum-dum." He is best known for his outbursts of "OM NOM NOM NOM" when eating, and the lesser-used "Cowabunga."

Even though Cookie Monster's speech patterns and mannerisms are childlike, often referring to himself as "me" instead of "I," and despite the fact that he is still learning to count and learn differences such as fast and slow, big and little, and loud and quiet, Cookie Monster is not only literate, but he has a penchant for poetry, having written poems for both Kermit the Frog and Howie the Rabbit. While Cookie Monster delights in eating, he no doubt enjoys counting and singing with the others. He does get disappointed if not rewarded with some form of snack upon the completion of a difficult task, such as counting, and can grow resentful is misled (this often ends with him devouring the nearest objects to compensate for his lack of reward cookies). He is not entirely ruled by his gluttonous appetite, and many times his conscience kicks in, reminding him that cookies taste best when shared with a friend.

Cookie Monster is something of a renaissance man, starring in his own cook books such as Cookie Monster's Little Kitchen, Baker, Baker, Cookie Maker, and The Biggest Cookie In the World. It also goes without saying that he's quite the singer, staring in famous pieces such as C is for Cookie, and a brief stint as a disco singer when he lost his cookie at the disco.

Despite numerous stories highlighting his warm and fuzzy milestones in sharing, counting, and eating, there is a darker side to his literary escapades as well. In Cookie Monster and the Cookie Tree, Cookie Monster thoroughly ravages a helpless cookie tree, and his wild western persona in The Great Cookie Thief steals away cookies from people when they are not looking in addition to committing identity fraud.

Another side of Cookie Monster, albeit not as gluttonous or simple-minded, is his alter-ego, Alistair Cookie. Clearly this side of Cookie Monster is far more educated and cultured, as he delves into analyzing classics such as One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and The King and I. Sitting in cozy chair in a study crammed with books from floor to ceiling, he sports a silk bathrobe and sometimes can be seen with a smoking pipe, however upon the completion of these literary asides, he is known for devouring his pipe, sometimes with the stories as well. However, he always makes the time to remark on the texture of his snacks.

Strengths: Cookie Monster has markedly the strongest stomach and mouth one could ever hope to come across. He has no difficult tearing into any material, whether it's crumbly cookies or brick walls and cars, as seen in The Monster's Three Wishes. This ability is mysterious, as he has no identifiable teeth. Teamwork is another strength of Cookie Monster's, shown in The Count Meets Cookie. The most important strength, of course, is his generosity--despite being a glutton for cookies, he can't help but share with those who are in need as displayed in Cookie Monster Shares.

Weaknesses: Cookie Monster's biggest fault is his overwhelming hunger. He has poor self control and tends to act on impulse. He has difficulty following rules and instructions, and despite repeatedly being told by the librarian that libraries do not have cookies, he continues to persevere as seen in No Cookies in the Library. Sometimes the impulse gets the best of him and he takes without asking, leaving others such as Ernie to take the blame in Who Took Bert's Cookies?. His lust for cookies sometimes even clouds his judgment, leading him to pack a basket full of unhealthy cookies instead of chicken soup for his sick grandmother in Sesame Street Newsflash: Little Red Riding Hood. His obsession with cookies can be called nothing short of unhealthy, causing him to even hallucinate and experience vivid nightmares (Cookie Monster Can't Sleep).

What flavor! What texture! What amazing chocolate chips--were they dark? They had to be because he'd never had such a delicious cookie before. Did he say cookie? No--there was a whole platter, right there for the taking--

Wait a moment, that didn't taste like a cookie. He rolled over and realized he had shoved his hand into his mouth. "Blech! Me no cookie... dat very silly mistake." He rubbed his googly eyes, then slouched forward, realizing the glorious buffet of sugary sweets was only a dream.

"What's a monster got to do to get a decent cookie around here? Me so, so hungry... me haven't eaten in... in whole hour! Dis is big tragedy."

Speaking of tragedies, where exactly was he? It certainly didn't look like Sesame Street... perhaps they were renovating? No, it was too quiet for Sesame Street. Cookie Monster pulled in his knees, feeling a bit frightened. How did he get here? And did he look both ways before crossing the street? Did he talk to any strangers? Or worse--did any strangers help him cross the street without looking both ways?

Suddenly, something shimmering caught the corner of his eye. He craned his head around and couldn't believe his eyes; was that a shiny cookie? But with every move he made, it seemed to move with him... what was it?

"Dis no time for playing hide and seek, little cookie! This time for playing 'Time to eat'--!"

But it wasn't a cookie, he realized to his confusion. "Wings? Little tiny fairy wings? Why does Cookie have little tiny fairy wings? Dey look just like cookies... What kind of cruel dream is dis?! Me can't eat wings!" Of course, that didn't stop him from trying to chew on one of them before spitting it out.

"Blech. Me no cookie. Dat very silly mistake... again."
