Profile
As his namesake implies, Cookie Monster has an insatiable passion for cookies, namely eating them. He has the tendency to appear wherever there are cookies, even at the mere mention of them, and he is known for devouring them in seconds, scattering crumbs in his wake. Cookie Monster does not discriminate what he puts in his stomach; if there are no cookies to be found, he has no trouble eating other objects, even
telephones,
typewriters, or a
Ford F-250 pickup truck, along with multiple numbers, letters, and shapes. It is easy to tell when he is approaching because you can hear him humming, "Dummm-de-dum-dum." He is best known for his outbursts of "OM NOM NOM NOM" when eating, and the lesser-used "Cowabunga."
Even though Cookie Monster's speech patterns and mannerisms are childlike, often referring to himself as "me" instead of "I," and despite the fact that he is still learning to count and learn differences such as fast and slow, big and little, and loud and quiet, Cookie Monster is not only literate, but he has a penchant for poetry, having written poems for both
Kermit the Frog and
Howie the Rabbit. While Cookie Monster delights in eating, he no doubt enjoys counting and singing with the others. He does get disappointed if not rewarded with some form of snack upon the completion of a difficult task, such as counting, and can grow resentful is misled (this often ends with him devouring the nearest objects to compensate for his lack of reward cookies). He is not entirely ruled by his gluttonous appetite, and many times his conscience kicks in, reminding him that cookies taste best when shared with a friend.
Cookie Monster is something of a renaissance man, starring in his own cook books such as
Cookie Monster's Little Kitchen,
Baker, Baker, Cookie Maker, and
The Biggest Cookie In the World. It also goes without saying that he's quite the singer, staring in famous pieces such as
C is for Cookie, and a brief stint as a disco singer when he
lost his cookie at the disco.
Despite numerous stories highlighting his warm and fuzzy milestones in sharing, counting, and eating, there is a darker side to his literary escapades as well. In
Cookie Monster and the Cookie Tree, Cookie Monster thoroughly ravages a helpless cookie tree, and his wild western persona in
The Great Cookie Thief steals away cookies from people when they are not looking in addition to committing identity fraud.
Another side of Cookie Monster, albeit not as gluttonous or simple-minded, is his alter-ego, Alistair Cookie. Clearly this side of Cookie Monster is far more educated and cultured, as he delves into analyzing classics such as
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and
The King and I. Sitting in cozy chair in a study crammed with books from floor to ceiling, he sports a silk bathrobe and sometimes can be seen with a smoking pipe, however upon the completion of these literary asides, he is known for devouring his pipe, sometimes with the stories as well. However, he always makes the time to remark on the texture of his snacks.
