Recently it's occurred to me that I write large amounts of text much better when I'm not editing it as I go along. Obviously, writing on a PC means that the temptation to mess around with things on the screen as you go is huge, so I've decided that a typewriter will be the way forward, at least for first drafts. I can OCR it and use the computer ( Read more... )

You could just pry the backspace and delete keys off your keyboard? :P

Nice idea, although most "real men's" editors either don't use them (vi) or have control key combinations to do the same thing... Plus I think not having a backspace key would annoy me when coding :)

Loose the control key too?, heh Well, I just thought it'd be a cheaper solution ;) I've no experience with typewriters I'm afraid so that was the best I could come up with!

What about ed? ;-) Or just piping lines from the shell to a text file?

I know what you mean about editing... I tend to write pieces of text by writing a basic outline then keep adding bits to it until it's "done", rather than writing in a linear manner - same for coding really.

You're not sane.

But the typewriter thing sounds cool. Also if you get a nice one it will be worth a mint in 50 years time. It's a slippery slope towards a steampunk lifestyle :)

Being a real man who uses vi(m) for at least 10 hours a day - I think that clearly... you are not sane.

Of course, if you were going to get a typewriter you could go all classic and to really obfuscate things, get one that predates QWERTY.

How are you going to do equations?

Meh, equations would suggest that I did real work. That's never likely to happen...

Typewriters are the BEST. It's what I learnt to touch-type on. :D And it won't destroy your finger joints. Unless you are weaksauce.
