I treated myself to seeing the film Into the Wild, and am so glad that I did. A young man goes through a personal journey in seeking happiness. He sees his parent's way and rejects it. He graduates from college, donates his $24K college fund to Oxfam. He then travels, has adventures and changes his name to Alexander Supertramp. He cuts of ties with ( Read more... )

That is very interesting to hear about dissociative identity disorder. I do look forward to reading the book and seeing what I think. The movie portrays Chris as completely sane and our culture as screwed up, or so he thinks. There is a scene where he sees another side of himself, who he could have been, and chooses to continue the path he is on. He is reacting in polarity to his parent's life, against what they stand for. So the life he creates is in a way running away and reactive maybe not authentic to who he would have become had he grown up beyond his 24 or so years. Blending of what you like about your parent's life and your own happens with maturity ( ... )

I remember reading about Chris years ago summitgeek3 November 24 2007, 20:05:06 UTC
Thanks for passing on the recommendation re the film and sharing your response to it. I enjoyed Krakauer's book "Into Thin Air". It will be interesting to see a film about how curiousity, creation and obsession are related, as well as how we personally experience through different filters.

So it was a good movie then? I heard about it but also heard that the book was preferable to the movie. I'd like to read the book, see the movie, or both but haven't done so yet.

Thanks for sharing this. I'm intrigued by this story now and will have to see it when it comes out on DVD. I love that John Prine song too and was just singing it with a group of people at a party I was at last week-end. It's a beautiful song and even more powerful when sung with a group of friends :)
