Film Fest day 1

Notes from films i saw today, as scribbled down in between showings.

Dog Nail Clipper
Story of a guy handicapped by a bullet to his head. Tragic to the extent that his happiness is simple to achieve but fails because human sympathy cannot control the harshness of nature (the dog he loves, bites his arm). Beautiful scenery of finland, I guess the workers of the camp and the women fall into the sample problem with nature as the main character.

Skritek
Bizarre movie, filmed without speech in mostly double time. Kind of a slapstick tragi-comedy that keeps going through the fantastic imaginary friend of the little girl. It's like a roadrunner cartoon where you have no idea that the coyote is actually going to be ok.

Estamira
I didn't realize this was a documentary walking into it. The film didn't elicit much of a good/bad response from me, more a 'what are they trying to do' one. Maybe it's what I've been reading, but it felt like trying to give a space for an unrepresented voice (A woman living on a garbage pile in brazil with 'mental disturbances'. It involved the policing of religion through family and state, psychiatry, and general family relations. Of all the parts of the film, Estamira's youngest daughter was the most powerful for me: she was born with Estamira as she lived in the garbage dump, and grew up there for eight years before being taken to a foster family. She was later reunited with Estamira and maintains a double family. She stays firmly on the fence, and considers the possibility of growing up on the garbage dump as good as the way she spent her early adolescence.

Souls of Naples
Stayed for 20 minutes, won't comment.
