I find that if opening a pdf doesn't crash my browser it seriously slows it down (Win, Lin and Mac), so I always set my browsers to save to disc and open them in whatever the default reader is, independent of browser.

Goog advice, but many journals don't give you that option, as the pdf versions are still wrapped up within complex web pages. ie right clicking on the link to the pdf saves an html page or a bit of php script, not a pdf file :(

I didn't mean right-clicking, I meant (according to what you can do as per your employer's IT policy) to set it up in the browser not to open, but to save. This is what I have set up with firefox and chrome in win7 and mint (I have no idea if I'd be able to do this with ie on xp at work, or if there would be "you can't do this due to restrictions in place on this computer" preventing me).

Changing the pdf setting from "open in Adobe 9.4(Firefox)" to "open in Adobe 9.0" seems to have fixed it. It seems to only crash when running as a plugin. Never tried fiddling with those settings before, so thanks for the suggestion.
