A crash. A slam. A brief silence followed by heavy breaths and heavier footsteps. Kyungsoo stirred from sleep, eyes blinking slowly as he peered out of his cage. He remained crouching on the floor, head hesitantly cocked as he listened in the darkness.

“Kyungsoo.”

He immediately jumped up, hands reaching out to clutch the cold bars. Kyungsoo recognized his master’s voice- a rich tenor that resonated with warmth and depth- yet there was a sharp tilt to his tone, a strained pitch at the end of his voice that made Kyungsoo’s heart pound in fear. A soft whine crept up his throat as he struggled to make out his master’s face.

“Kyungsoo. There you are.”

Yixing stepped up to the cage. Even in the nightfall, Kyungsoo could see the lines of exhaustion and worry on his face, the tight press of his lips as Yixing reached out to caress Kyungsoo’s face. He leaned into his master’s touch and sighed deeply.

“I’m sorry I woke you up,” Yixing whispered. His eyes softened, fright momentarily dissolving into adoration, as he looked down at the other. “I needed to see you.”

Smiling sadly at Kyungsoo’s questioning gaze, Yixing reached into his robes. He grabbed the gold chain that hung around his throat, revealing a jeweled key. “Tonight, I will be joining you.” Unlocking the cage, Yixing stepped inside and tightly hugged the smaller male.

Kyungsoo froze. His master had never embraced him before, much less entered his cage. It was always Kyungsoo who was led to Yixing’s library at dusk, where he stood on the other side of the room as Yixing watched him sing. The only contact they had ever had was the brief, yet lingering, brush of Yixing’s fingers across Kyungsoo’s cheeks every time he left.

But Kyungsoo would be lying if he said he did not dream of Yixing’s touches, of his master’s warm laughter and strong arms surrounding his body. On more than one occasion, Kyungsoo had flushed at Yixing’s gazes, a small part of him trembling in fear should his master know of his true feelings. Yet here he was, caught up in Yixing’s tender embrace. As Kyungsoo smiled contentedly, hands reaching up to encircle his master, loud shouts erupted down the hall.

“Your majesty!”

A guard burst into the room. His armor was stained deep red, sword trembling in his hand, as he strode towards Yixing.

“We must leave now- they’ve breached the wall!”

“They’ve come for him,” Yixing said. His voice was raspy, trembling at the edges, as he looked down at Kyungsoo. “They’ve come for my songbird.”

“Your majesty, please.” The guard’s gaze jumped to Kyungsoo quickly before looking back at Yixing. “You do not have any time left.”

“You’ve served me well.” Yixing looked back to the guard, giving him a wistful smile. “But it would do well to serve yourself now. Go.”

“Master, I cannot-”

“Please. Leave me with him.”

Kyungsoo looked between the two, eyes widening with each passing word. More cries echoed from the hall, the sound of metal joining the commotion. From the window, orange light flickered into the room, casting shadows across the floor. Kyungsoo trembled, fingers clutching onto Yixing.

“Go,” Yixing repeated. “Please.”

The guard took a faltering step back before running out. The door slammed behind him, dulling the loud clamor from outside.

“Kyungsoo,” Yixing murmured. “Will you sing for me?”

Kyungsoo nodded, squeezing his eyes shut to block the terror that grew inside him. Taking a shuddering breath, he tried to sing a few notes, only to let out a weak wail.

“My songbird.” Yixing pressed his forehead to Kyungsoo’s, tender eyes gazing steadfastly into his own. “Sing with me.”

Kyungsoo listened as Yixing’s smooth voice drowned out the chaos and calmed the racing of his heart. Following his lead, Kyungsoo hummed along before joining him in singing their song.

In my life
You have burst like the music of angels
The light of the sun
and my life seems to stop
As if something is over
and something has scarcely begun

The shouts grew louder, echoing all around them and sinking right down to Kyungsoo’s bones, but Yixing clutched onto him harder. His master had a beautiful smile on his face as he stared down at him, so that all Kyungsoo could see was his face and those soft, tender eyes that had drawn him in since the beginning.

I did not live until today
How can I live when we are parted?

Yixing covered Kyungsoo’s eyes with his hand, clutching him to his chest as he whispered words into his ears- through the burning chaos, through the screams and harsh crashes and sound of broken things. Yixing’s words continued to ring his ears even through the gurgling murmurs and through the unforgiving silence that followed. Tears streaming through Yixing’s cold hand, Kyungsoo continued singing into the night for his beloved master.

Tomorrow you’ll be worlds away
And yet with you, my world has started.
