I thought it would be fun to post this on White Day, since it's so upbeat and all.
花言葉 (Hanakotoba/Language of Flowers)
Kitayama/Fujigaya
PG, 280 words
Fujigaya is charmed with the cluster of sweet peas he finds sitting on his dressing table when he gets in to work, until Yokoo stops in passing and gives him an odd look, gentle and sympathetic and a bit sad.
"What is it?" Fujigaya wonders.
Yokoo tilts his chin towards the flowers. "Sweet peas."
"They're pretty, aren't they?" Fujigaya smiles at them. "Pink, like my member color. I wonder who sent them though, there was no card..?"
"Mm," murmurs Yokoo, careful to keep his voice neutral. He continues on into the room, dropping off his own duffel bag and puttering around doing small nothings, setting the room to rights for when the rest of the members arrive.
Fujigaya is in the middle of pondering who the sender could have been again when Yokoo suddenly speaks up, interrupting his thoughts. "Taisuke, did you know that each flower has its own meaning?"
"Hmm? You mean like a red rose means love and that sort of thing?"
"Yeah," Yokoo says, then hesitates again.
Looking from Yokoo's concerned expression to the pretty pink flowers on his table, Fujigaya feels his stomach clench in apprehension. "So... you obviously know... What do sweet peas mean?"
Yokoo opens his mouth. Closes it again.
"They mean 'goodbye'," says a low voice behind him, and Fujigaya whips around to see Kitayama standing there framed in the doorway. His eyes don't quite meet Fujigaya's, and that just makes Fujigaya's stomach twist more.
"I see," he says, and turns away.
He doesn't smile at the flowers any more, but he lets them sit there until the leaves are all shriveled up and the petals litter the ground around his dressing table.
