Simulacrum
Kitayama
PG, 327 words, character study

Kitayama sleeps because his dreams are better than his reality. In his dreams, he can make anything happen.

When he was young, he would dream he was playing with the toys his mother wouldn’t buy him, or eating the sweets that were forbidden. He dreamed about having his favorite curry for lunch at school, and pulling on the pigtails of the prettiest girl in class. He dreamed about a father who would play with him in the park and pick him up from school and smile across the dinner table at his mother.

When he reached puberty, his dreams became strange and amorphous. Once, he dreamed of being chased by ninjas over rooftops and under a purple sea, and when they finally caught up to him, he willed his hands to shoot lasers, like in the action show he’d watched earlier that day, and beamed them all to ashes. That was the first time Kitayama figured out that he could control his own dreams.

The next night, he went to bed early, without prodding, eager to try out his newfound skill. In his dream, he was flying in an airplane; he willed the sky to turn green and yellow and made the airplane disappear around him. The night after that, he amused himself by adding rolling credits to the end of his dreams. He visited Moscow, Hawaii, Paris, Okinawa, the Sahara Dessert, in a succession of nights.

As he grew up and experienced more of the world, his dreams became increasingly detailed. He peopled the streets of his dreams with the people he’d seen in the streets of Tokyo, and stockpiled miscellaneous facts in his head to use at night. He learned to control his dreams entirely, was able to craft them in vivid detail from scratch. He’d spend his days with his head in the clouds, planning out the things he would do with his eyes closed at night.

In his dreams, the possibilities are endless.
