You know that feeling when you stumble into YouTube and can't escape?

Last week Eledhwenlin talked about the awesome German bands that she listens to, and I...well, okay. I've been mainlining a lot of German music lately, because it turns out that she's a genius and I do approximately a million times better at learning a language when there's music involved ( Read more... )

Coool! I very much look forward to watching/listening when I'm not at my house, where it would take about an hour for each vid to finish buffering.

This reminds me, do you recall the name of the German band that was the first opener at the show with First National Bank of Toronto Rock Plaza Central and the Weakerthans? I quite liked them.

They're not all objectively brilliant, honestly. But they're sort of...in my wheelhouse for comfort music? I'm thinking of making an actual playlist based on my favorite songs from these bands (which, for the record, are not really on this list because most of them aren't singles, as I am an incurable hipster poseur). Once I get you all hooked on the videos, that is.

I don't remember who it was? But maybe I can find the ticket or the tour info somewhere; if I do, I'll send it your way. *g*

I don't think I have any of their stuff. Weird. I should probably think about fixing that.

Or maybe a song about the perils of academia and the ultimate futility of Literary Analysis would be better. Or, um. The way that the attractions of Literary Theory pale beside those of the girl who sits to the left in a classroom.

I HAVE BEEN IN THOSE CLASSES. Man, now I'm sad that I don't speak German, because I suspect that song would speak to my SOUL. *g*

(Also Brad Colbert: Reluctant Rockstar is SOLID GOLD. And I still want actual RPF about the people in that music video. The poor guy singing is going to be SO SAD that he missed drunken cuddle night when he finds out about it.)

So, true story. I took that song in this morning to check with Dirk the German Prof on my translation. Dirk, mind you, has a PhD in the field they're singing about. He got about 30 seconds in and cracked up. Then he spent about five minutes explaining why the academic culture in Germany is completely fucked (almost exactly the same way that it is here, actually). And now I'm supposed to send him a link.

Which is to say, I really need to find the time to translate that one properly.

(SO SAD. He would have cuddled! But he was busy singing on a park bench because...that's a thing people do?)

Well if you do find time to translate it, I'd love to read it! ♥

(Well. I mean. Who DOESN'T sing on a park bench? I know that is how I pass my time EVERY DAY.)

(Singing on park benches is the next big thing, it's true.)

Mostly what I learned from this is that asshole is still one of the only words in German I know (or at least recognize when said and maybe written, even if I can never remember it off the top of my head)! Well, apparently that and "drink the cocktails"*; I'm concerned about what this might say about my future in German-speaking worlds.

NA NA NA NA NA NA!

apparently so many of my icons have Opinions about Germans it was hard to choose one. Who knew?

*oh, FROM. Google translate made that last video WAY WAY WEIRDER OK.

Google translate is hilarious. The laws of probability would seem to require that the translation be right at least occasionally, and yet.

Pure talent? Or, you know. A complete lack of standards and also a tendency to avoid working by trolling youtube for stuff I haven't heard. Might be that one.

Michael Heß is RIDICULOUS and I love all four of his songs that I've found. And that he made his own video, because...of reasons. I don't know what those reasons ARE, but I'm sure they're important and stuff.

ps. I finally got the other Angelika Express CD, so I'll do something with that soonish. Maybe next weekend, when I'm back online for a few hours?
