[Summary]: IC!Mello drags OOC!Near with him on a date chocolate run. Nothing good could possibly come out of it, right?

There were some things which Mello had settled right back into, pieces of an old life that still didn't feel completely like it was his. Actions, repeated long enough to be regained habitually into his memory were hardly lost -- wolfing down whole chocolate bars, for example. Idolizing L. Creating trouble when he was bored out of his skull.

There were others which he thought might have been new. Keeping a hand-written journal, for example, in the hopes that somehow, piece by piece, he'd eventually have an entire puzzle with a picture that made sense, rather than scattered and missing jigsaw pieces. Taking extended walks, hoping to see something familiar, hoping to find something that made a little more sense. Some days he succeeded, others he didn't.

Some days all he ended up with was even more questions. Standing in an grocery store aisle Mello wondered why he had even asked Near to accompany him (or rather, why he had dragged Near along) on his "Crusade for Chocolate".

"Oi, Near~ Did you want to get anything?" Mello asked, raising an eyebrow before he reached out to grab the closest milk chocolate Hershey bar.

The younger boy had sparkles in his eyes. He had sparkles all over, actually, as he couldn't believe Mello had asked him out on a date~! Could things get any better than this? Surely that wasn't possible!

"I don't need anything, Mello, thank you very much for asking." His sparkles increased after Mello spoke, and he realized that things had, indeed, become better: Mello had cared enough to ask if he wanted something!

Of course, there was also the possibility of Mello just trying to be polite, but, did it matter? It didn't, nothing could ruin such a moment.

Ah, but wait! He needed to show Mello how thankful he was for being invited! He didn't want Mello to think that just because he didn't plan on buying anything, that he was uncomfortable.

"Me... Mello, th... tha... Thank you for... for..."

Apparently, he was too happy for words.

On second thought, perhaps one chocolate bar wouldn't be enough. Mello eyed the rest of the shelved candy, silently debating on cleaning out all the chocolate in the aisle. He certainly had enough yen to do so, L had been kind enough to provide them with cash for their little extravaganza.

Tossing a glance toward Near, he noted the sparkles that seemed to radiate from the smaller boy. It was amazing, really, how Near's behavior had changed. The snow-haired boy seemed so serious and level-headed when Mello had first met him, and now... he was all sparkles and happiness. It was sort of creepy actually, the blonde was seriously beginning to wonder if Near was bipolar.

"Thanks for what?" Mello asked curtly, turning fully toward the Near. Placing a hand on his hip, he leaned over slightly, until he was at eye level with Near, his face only a few inches away from the other boy's.

"...!!"

That really caught Near off guard. His eyes opened wide as Mello leaned close; his sparkles disappeared and his cheeks suddenly turned pink.

It was... the first time... Mello was this close... It was the first time anyone was this close, period.

Finding words had become even harder than before, and the only thing he could think about right now was about how close Mello was and how painfully fast his own heart was pounding in his chest.

He found himself staring at Mello's lips after looking at his eyes, suddenly wondering what a kiss felt like... But he shook the thought from his mind, returning his gaze to Mello's eyes once more, still speechless.

"Cat got your tongue?" A slow smirk crossed Mello's girlishly pink lips. It all suddenly made sense, why Near had been so willing to stand by him in his illness; why he seemed to be so easily hurt and flustered, especially when he was present... Near had a crush on him; or at least had a bad case of shyness. Either way, Mello could use this new discovery to his advantage. ...When he felt like it. It might be useful for obtaining information later on, or executing some secret master plan.

Slowly he returned to a normal standing position, shaking his head and laughing softly. "If you want something, you should go after it, Near." Another laugh sounded as Mello turned his attention back to the chocolate bars that occupied the shelves. Grabbing as many bars as he could carry, Mello started to walk towards the cash register. Pausing, he looked over his shoulder with a grin, "Come on, shorty."

'Shorty?;;;' was all he could think for a moment. His mind slowly returning to normal, managing to regain control over his thoughts and use his rational side once more.

The blonde's smirk was something that didn't go unnoticed; perhaps Mello had found out about the control he had over Near. He couldn't say he was disturbed by that, really, as his weakness for Mello was something he never tried to hide. He actually felt more relieved than anything, as Mello didn't react angrily when he found out. He had smiled, instead; maybe proud of his victory, maybe plotting how to use him properly... It didn't matter, as long as he wasn't angry.

He started walking behind Mello, recalling his words 'If you want something, you should go after it, Near.'

Hesitating for a moment, he suddenly reached out for Mello's free hand, taking it while he avoided looking at the blonde, still flushing. He hoped Mello wouldn't mind holding his hand all the way back...

By the time Near had made a grab for his hand, the chocolate bars had been paid for and placed in a plastic bag which he had slipped around his wrist. It wasn't a lie to say he had been looking forward to satisfying his chocolate fix as soon as he had purchased the addictive candy, but when he felt Near's hand in his own he felt that he could wait awhile longer.

True, he had been planning to use Near's feelings for his personal amusement... but he had to respect the other boy just a little bit for going ahead and taking his advice. Squeezing Near's hand slightly to let him know that the affectionate gesture was welcomed, he proceeded to walk out of the convenience store.

"If you think acting cute is going to get me to share my chocolate haul with you, you've got another thing coming."

A soft smile crossed Near's lips when he felt Mello squeezing his hand. This Mello was really affectionate, despite whatever evil plan had crossed his mind a moment ago. It didn't matter though, nothing mattered. Near knew too many ways of hurting the blonde, maybe too many for his taste. He knew him too well... Every single weak point of his, every single tear he could rip from those eyes.

But it didn't matter if Mello tried to take advantage of him; he was decided to never do anything to hurt boy. Never ever, no matter the situation. He didn't want anyone else to hurt him either, though he was sure that nobody could do it like he could.

He was handing Mello a certain control over him, but what Mello didn't know was that Near had control over him as well. In their hands lied the power to destroy each other, as well as the power to save each other; that's how Near felt about them both. That's what made this little game interesting; that's perhaps why he felt too attracted to Mello: Because Mello was the only one who could really destroy him.

"Ah... I'm glad you find me cute, Mello~" he said teasingly, but still with a shy tone that didn't seem to leave his voice. An innocence that quite contrasted his previous thoughts...

Mello rolled his eyes, the smug grin that played upon his lips remained very much intact. "You would be, wouldn't you?" An afterthought, "Brat." The blonde experimentally tugged on Near's hand, pulling the other boy forward just enough to jostle him. "You're not walking fast enough, do try to keep up."

The sparkles that usually hung around Near like some form of plague hadn't yet returned, and that fact was duly noted by the older boy. Did that mean that Near was being weighed down by his own thoughts? If so, then his companion was far too easy to read. This new information only furthered his theory Near being bipolar; the snow-haired boy was quick to give into happiness, and could just as quickly fall into a brooding frame of mind. ...Though, something about it annoyed him; perhaps it was the fact that he saw so much of himself in the other boy; to the point where it was almost unsettling.

Idly he wondered if the mild annoyance that he experienced now would grow into full-fledged hatred later on; and if so, how soon. He already had begun to remember a majority of things, mostly concerning his adoration for L, bits and pieces about the clones and the Kira case, small details about Whammy's House; but all of the memories had been flashes or one-time occurrences. More importantly, he still couldn't seem to remember anything about Near. Had his dislike for the other boy been so intense that his mind simply refused to call up the details of their past relationship?

For now it's best to play nice, Mihael. Because giving into his former self seemed so much like losing, because he didn't want to be controlled by some unseen force, because he wanted to hold out for as long as he could before the inevitable happened. He was a stubborn teenager who had a penchant for defying all odds; that was something that would never change.

"Ah..." Near was unused to walk so much, but he still wanted to keep Mello's pace. However, as much as he wanted to, he was still a very clumsy boy and tripped when Mello jostled him. "Uwa!" Unconsciously, he clung onto Mello in order not to fall, almost making the older boy lose his balance and fall with him.

"......"

After a moment, he realized that he hadn't let go of Mello yet... And there was a strange force that drove him to bury his face in Mello's chest instead of pulling back.

Seconds ticked away, and all Mello could do was stare down at the smaller boy who was, for all intents and purposes, clinging to him. This, most definitely, hadn't been a part of his calculations. All he had really wanted to do was make Near to stumble a bit, not cause the outright fall which almost sent them both crashing to the ground.

"Holding hands wasn't good enough for you, eh?" Though he had been lucky enough to prevent their unceremonious fall, he wasn't quite sure how to deal with the fact that Near was seemingly attached to his body. The blonde silently fought the urge to simply push Near away, perhaps the snow-haired boy would be smart enough to let go on his own.

Near still took another moment to react, before slowly letting go of Mello. His gaze didn't meet the other boy's this time, avoiding it on purpose, yet smiling innocently as if nothing had happened. "Sorry, I'm a bit clumsy. Let's go?"

This said, he continued walking toward headquarters, not taking Mello's hand again and not even waiting for him to start walking as well.

There was something in his mind, something he wanted to ask, among many other things that were currently crossing it. But he did nothing for now; he just waited for a good chance.

For awhile the duo walked on in silence, without exchanging any glances or gestures; without acknowledging each other's existence. In a way, it was almost as bad as walking by himself; he knew that Near wasn't happy, and really, he wasn't either. The smile from earlier, the same smile that he knew was still upon the other boy's lips, something about it had seemed forced, and that fact alone was bothersome.

Mello had never been one to tolerate the quiet for long, the blonde decided to take action. Reaching out, he grabbed Near's shoulder, effectively stopping the smaller boy. "You're not that clumsy, you know?" It wasn't much by way of words, but Mello thought it helped. Lifting a hand, he ruffled Near's hair slightly before walking on.

Near's heart skipped a beat when he felt Mello's hand on his shoulder. The very first and most unconscious thought that crossed his mind was that Mello was going to hit him; force of habit, maybe.

But soon he relaxed, or tried to, as he felt as if all the blood from his body was running to his head, forcing his cheeks to colour again and giving him this dizzy feeling he only got when Mello was around.

This situation was really unusual, so unusual that Near didn't know how to react most of the time. Mello tended to break things and leave them like that, it was something Near had gotten used to. But now he had a boy in front of him trying to fix things whenever he thought something was broken.

He wasn't sure he liked it. It was nice, really nice, that's why he was wary of the current situation. If he got used to Mello fixing him whenever he was broken, he'd lose the ability to do it himself, which wasn't good. He was going to need that ability soon, so it was inadvisable to fall too deep into this rabbit hole.

"You are too nice, Mello..." he said; a very soft and small smile crossing his lips. He was still avoiding the blonde's eyes.

He wanted to ask this, he really wanted to... Maybe it was the chance, after all; why should he wait any longer?

"Didn't you start hating me already?" His tone quite detached, as if merely asking out of curiosity.

"Too nice?" Mello laughed as he turned around, though he kept on walking in a backwards fashion. Even if he was walking blind, the blonde never really stopped moving forward, and never would until the day that he died. "Clearly, you don't appreciate me enough." Another amused chortle sounded, but was cut short as soon as other boy's question met his ears.

Dark eyes widened as Mello paused for a moment, letting Near catch up to his position. "Did I start to hate you?" An off-kilter grin spread across his face as he leaned down to capture Near's lips in a quick kiss that was mainly for shock factor. "...No, I don't think I have."

Then, all to quickly, his legs started to move out of their own accord.

"....Come on, shorty."
