So the current Dead line (yes, with a capital D) for the bathroom being finished is Christmas. So far most of the tiles have gone up with just a few more whole tiles & several half-tiles to go. The flooring is in the corner ready to go, as are the skirting boards, the bath is having it's final levelling session as I type. Final coats of paint on

If you ever spend a night in my spare room you will see where i learnt this lesson.
Make sure there are no 'ridges' on the wall before you paper.

The trick is to get some fine surface filler and fill and sand smooth the bad areas, remembering to use a sanding block so you don't make new dips etc... - if you have a large area that is awful, i had big success with that polycell smooth over stuff.
There is a knack to it that i would be happy to share with you if you give me a bell - but it was a lot less effort than filling and sanding millions of ridges on this wall that had all this old paint on it and crap.
The plasterer that came to do our landing complimented me on how smooth my 'smoothed over' wall was, so i think it works.'
