Hokay, so credit. As I've said before credit cards are used to "establish good credit" i.e. show the bank that you are able to manage paying a bill on time preventing you from making late payments and sliding into debt. You DO NOT need a credit card to take out a loan, you only need proof of credit history. As it stands you have no credit except that whopping bill from the hospital as a debt against you (since you are both uninsured and no longer dependant on your folks). When you apply (at your bank) for a loan, that's all the bank is going to see *flashing red light* unpaid debt and will be less likely to loan you money. If you do get a loan (and you may not get it in its entirety but rather a lesser amount), you'll have to pay the bank back the loan + interest (especially if your payments are late). So while getting rid of one bill (the hospital bill) with the loan, you're creating new debt with the bank which you will have to pay back if you want to apply for any future loans
