servers here are making $8 an hour(to start) if not more, so i don't feel too bad for them. i feel bad for you! just not servers here. i give 15%, but if i get bad service i'll leave a shitty tip. i don't feel obligated to give 15%. i'm not saying servers need to go out of their way for me. for standard service, i give 15%. if they do stuff to piss me off, then i will go lower than 15%. don't hate me!

what's sales tax there? heartsartre November 19 2007, 05:23:41 UTC
in cali it's 7.5%, so if you double it, you're giving a 15% tip

sales tax is 8.25, but it's probably barely 10% of the tab. i dont know, i guess considering i dont get a paycheck and all the money i DO make is from tips..i just expect a lot from tips.

i can totally understand that tips are where you get your money. i'm just saying, that if tax is 8.25, then people who double tax are giving you over 16% of the tab.

i made $2.13 an hour.

usually i tip %18, or %15 if they were REALLY bad. but if they were good i'll give them %20-%25. If i know them, lik worked with them, i leave a lot, cause thats what they do for me.

but to calculate it i use my phone.

me too. some girl in my sociology class, never talked to her anything, sat in my section..her and her cousin had a $38 dollar tab and i hooked it up on the alcohol for them, she left me a $10 tip. so sweet.

i need a tip calculator in my phone. i do have one of those card things though!!

I always do 20%! I just move the decimal once to the left and double that number. So like... a 59.55 dinner would be a $12 tip cause I round up, lol.

servers get a min wage of 7 or 8 bucks in san diego, and new york city too i think (both places i've lived).

and though sales tax is about 7.75 in both places, doubling that is STILL a shitty tip where i've been. i can't speak for the south or midwest, but for east and west coast urban a 20% tip is standard. 25-30 for good to excellent service.

THANK YOU!! i just dont understand where this rule of "doubling the tax" is the way to tip; it's barely about a 10% tip, usually.

i can understand tipping off of the total bill BEFORE tax, but good lord.

a standard tip here runs about 15%-22%; more if the service is that wonderful!
