First, I have to say how much I truly loved this entire story. I cried at several points during the last chapters

The way I thought about it, when September's shadow was cut from her, it became it's own entity (or maybe it was the whole time), and went skipping off of it's own volition. Septembers shadow seemed not merely a part of September, but a character in it's own right, a character that was a world away when she wished "everyone," meaning her present party, whole and safe.

I understood it as the shadow no longer being a part of September, and thereby no longer being necessary to make her "whole", after it had been cut off.
