Edmund had his feet propped up on a nearby chair as he sat, silent in thought, looking across at Peter. "Which rather makes it a disaster," Peter commented, also for the third or fourth time. He stood up, pacing over to the map to trace his finger over the affected area. "From some perspectives anyhow. Not to mention the costs."

He glanced over his shoulder at Edmund, pulling a half-joking face at the thought. "And we don't have a Mrs. Beaver for every kitchen in the country."

"What about the Lone Islands? Have we reports on their year's harvests yet?"

"We're expecting word within the week. We're going to owe the merfolk for their trip. They're faster than any ship, but they weren't easy to convince to leave shallow Narnian waters." That sort of thing had fallen to Edmund to arrange. "Archenland may have food to spare. They had an unseasonably good crop, but King Lune is still holding out for fear of a long winter. Everyone is keeping tight reigns on their supplies this year."
