Marvellous. :) Although I will not agree with calling it fakery; if the sound you create is pleasing to the ear, then it is music, regardless of where or how you learned it. I will be more than happy to augment what you already know, however.

I recommend the philosophy major. I thought of majoring in poetry and creative writing, but decided not to for the same reason you are apprehensive about a music degree. I can't suggest what freshman level courses to take in the department, being a transfer student myself, but all in all I've found philosophy a useful thing, more useful than some might imagine.

Do you write, then? You mention poetry and creative writing... I have long thought that the crafting of excellent poetry is much the same as the creation of good song, something in which I dabble.

I do write, and I agree with your description, although I have never been able to get the hang of a musical instrument or composition- rhythm is one of the most important things to master in either regard, and not solely in terms of meter.
