Susan's encounter with Ygritte had been on her mind all day and into the evening. She tried to tell herself there was nothing to it, she was being silly, but the more she tried not to think about it, the more she thought about it. Even when she and Jon went to bed, it was still on her mind, distracting her to the point that she hardly noticed him

At first Susan had appeared to be close to sleep, or else deep in thought; but when she turned towards Jon and kissed him with more than simple affection in it, he smiled against her lips and pulled her a little closer to him. "I had thought you were nearly asleep," he murmured, his mouth drifting down to her throat.

"No," she whispered, slipping an arm around him and turning her head a little, wanting more of his mouth on her skin. "I was just waiting for you." Perhaps that was what she needed just then, to be close to Jon, to remind her where her heart lay.

"Lucky me," Jon said softly, nuzzling his lips against her collarbone. And indeed he did feel lucky; intimate moments like this would be harder to come by once the baby was born, he knew, and so was grateful for every one he had the opportunity to enjoy. Slipping a hand beneath her shirt, he traced his fingertips over her warm skin while his kisses trailed up her neck to her lips once more.

Once Susan had gotten over feeling sick all the time, she had found she wanted to be with Jon even more than she did before she got pregnant - which was considerable to start with. Even when she was tired or her back troubled her, it took very little on Jon's part to arouse her - which was why the hollow, restless feeling that plagued her just now was so disturbing. She didn't feel the closeness she always felt with him; something was wrong. And she didn't like it.

Trying to make that feeling go away, wanting their normal closeness, she made a soft little sound and pushed Jon onto his back, kissing him hard.
