Merlin was notorious for plenty of things; his complete inability to do what he's told, a nearly nonexistent drive for self preservation, and a knack for doing the most impulsive thing (however idiotic) in any given situation were, in the end, only small details in the grand scheme of it all. But as it stood when Arthur came charging in to drag him out of the way, Merlin knew (somewhat distantly) that he should just listen to him. He should follow orders and turn around because whatever these raiders were after, Merlin was very clearly not going to be much of a threat. When the strangers had burst in his first thought, after the initial what is happening who are these people and-is that my door on the ground had been that Merlin was very simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. [Arthur wasn't sure exactly what Merlin was doing behind him, but he knew the boy was still in the room half from the sound of him staggering about, and half because every now and then his opponent would glance passed Arthur's shoulder to whatever was happening behind him. His servant was right, though, because mythical creature's notwithstanding- this guy was vicious. If he stopped to think about it- which he wasn't going to- this fight might have been similar to fighting that Wraith, had Arthur actually fought him. His opponent's weapon was strange, it hummed and was clearly magic, and sparks flew as blades cracked, Arthur's own weapon singing like it were being forged by a blacksmith. He spun, ducking under the opposing weapon and slashed at the raider's side- it hardly did any damage, he could tell, but it was enough for his opponent to snarl and back off for just a fraction of a moment. It was long enough for Arthur's harsh, blue eyes to turn to Merlin who, surprise surprise, was still in the room.]

Merlin, you idiot, get out!
