She hasn't been silenced though - she was free to attend and participate. I think the important thing that happened here is that, as a consequence of her bigotry, she will not be HONORED. She's the one who has made the choice to walk away from any sort of attendance, you know?
Oh, she TOTALLY is. There were some interesting plans for her GoH speech that were in the works. I think a lot of the same conversations are going to happen, at least - they better, anyway. Because Wiscon took a lot of damage to its reputation during the decision-making process and it really has to step up now and start earning trust again.
"You suck and everyone who shares your religious and/or ethnic self-identification sucks, and you should work as hard as you can to be like us awesome hegemonists" = heroic challenge of the status quo.
"Your statements are not okay, and we have decided not to honor you after all" = horrific personal attack verging on fascism.
How does that even work? Free speech means that Moon can't be arrested for saying her petty bigoted shit, it doesn't mean that we all have to invite her into our living rooms and listen to her nonsense.
