UCL interviews post-mortem

Well, I have to say that they seemed to go quite well.

There were about 8 of us, and I was the only one wearing a suit. Still, better to be over-dressed than under-dressed - you can dial the level of formality down with tone of voice, choice of vocabulary and body language, but it's hard to do it the other way.

Heh. Mark and Matt are great! Both lectured me and Mark is incredibly funny (while hating B physics with a passion!) Matt is, without a doubt, the best lecturer I've ever had, or at least I got more out of him than out of anyone else (including about a dozen free pints!) It's quite funny to hear of them in a formal interviewy context. Best of luck with it all! I'm sure you'll get a great place!

Out of interest, did you get to meet any of the current PhDers?

Mark seemed rather hyper, and a bit eager. In fact, he scared me a bit! Not to say that he's not nice - finding out that he got banned from the Lamb and Flag for cashing too many bouncing cheques was a nice touch.

Jamie rated Mark too; he struck me as a very nice guy.

Also, I really liked Mark's approach to theorists - 'not today, thanks'. The idea of having no theorists but a phenomologist appealed to me too. His derision of string theorists was great, fits in with what a lot of people think; explains everything, predicts nothing, not falsifiable - that's not science, really, is it? That's some damn physics-trained mathmo having a laugh.
