 Windows can go get fucked. Here I am with my shiny reasonably new laptop running Vista, when the fucking OS decided to shit itself and die the other day. One OS recovery later, and i'm 25 gig of music down, and not very fucking impressed. So i decide to do the difficult, and pull the music back off the old hard drive from my ~completely~ fucked xp

Depending on the cards in question, you may not be able to connect due to the cable. Network cables need to go through a hub, switch, or router to be able to connect to another machine.

To go from one machine direct to another, you need a cross-over cable (usually red coloured, as opposed to network blue/grey).

i used to be so good at IT. Although, it sumpin i've done plenty of times before with the same damn pooters. just before the great Ubuntu debacle...

see, and now i have this pooter (the laptop) on the network, and i have the desktop plugged in via the router. desktop pc can now access the internet etc, but damned if it'll let me see the other pooters on the network. even though this one is set as public with sharable files etc i just can't find the damn thing!

Ah. The answer to that one is simple. Kick Bill Gates in the face, and call him a cunt.

Failing that. Try statically assigned IP's (make sure they're different), set the workgroup to the same workgroup in network settings, possibly do some chanting and sacrifice a pen to the computer gods.

Share a folder on both machines, ensure both machines have different network names, and lastly perform a Lithuanian rain dance.

Don't forget to reboot. ;o)
