School headache

Aug 27, 2007 08:39

I noticed that my Advanced Placement exam credit was not among my college transfer credits, and I emailed my college to ask them why. They said my high school didn't include my AP records, so, despite having my U.N.O. college transcript which indicates I had entered with credit in English and wasn't required to take freshman composition, they don' ( Read more... )

You can ask the AP testing service to send the scores to your school - See this website for more information: http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/ap/exgrd_rep.html

Hope that helps!

When I was in freshman comp years ago, I was able to dodge the class by offering three papers of my own choosing.
Perhaps if you take the course but discuss your situation with those profs teaching it you'll be able to get a similar pass.
Note:
Actually it was rather fun.
T.H. White's "The Sword in the Stone"
Theodore Sturgeon's "Some of Your Blood"
Clifford D. Simak's "Way Station"
I might have done the papers on my own anyway.

Luckily I've found a way to get my AP scores sent so I won't have to go that route. I always enjoyed writing, and I'm good at it, but I hate having to retake something I've finished already, you know? =/

At the U of A, you could take a placement test to get "credit" for freshman comp. I.E. you didn't get any credits on your transcript, but it counted as having passed it for the purposes of prerequisites and graduation. Maybe the new school has something like that.

Yes, I think I remember something about that. I'll have to check into it. I'll bet there are a few courses I could test out of. Thanks for reminding me! :D

In addition to the placement test idea - didn't you have to take an AP test?

When I took AP Chemistry, I took the class through my high school, and that was fine and dandy, but they weren't the ones that gave AP credit - I had to take the AP Chemistry test which was not administered through my school - the scores were sent to my school, but not part of my official school transcript. (I got a 3 - enough for elective credit, but not enough to pass out of Chemistry) ;)

Anyway - you should be able to get a transcript from the testing agency (for a fee of course)...

Yes, I did get the link (and then the corrected link) from someone on my flist. Thanks for reminding me of that. I can't believe my high school told me they didn't even know what it was, much less who to contact! UGH!

"Four years after your test date, your AP grades are removed from our active computer files and archived. Requests for these archived grades must be in writing and cost $25 per recipient. . . ."

From here. Basically, your AP grades were sent directly to the college, not to your high school. Or at least that's how it looks like they're doing it these days. (I could have taken one or two AP exams but didn't, so this is all from their Web site.)

At work, I keep thinking about how one of the things that college students need to learn is how to hack the bureaurcracy. Go you for using the resources at hand (including LJ).

*nod* way back when I took it...AP scores were mailed home at some period after the test was taken (usually sometime over the summer). A copy was sent to the school but at our school - as with most in our area, it went in our file, but not in our permanent transcripts.

When I went on to USC, I had to provide proof that I took the AP Chem test, and my score (in the form of my score report that I had a copy of that had been mailed to me)...it was based on this score report, and not my official transcripts, that they determined whether or not I passed out of Chem 105, qualified for Honors Chem 105, had basic Chem 105, with elective credit, or nothing at all...a 3 qualified me for the 3rd option.

In this particular case, I'm not so sure this would qualify as hacking the bureaucracy so much as learning to navigate the system - the system for older score reports has been around for a while. BTW - this is the *same* process for older SATs and GREs - and the same authority to go to.

Well, I remember taking it and getting a postcard with my score, but the school had a copy of the results in my file as well, so I figured they'd be the ones to contact. I remember that my English teacher knew my score already when I came in to tell her, so I know they had a copy of the scores. =/

It's ok, I'm gonna work it out. It's just a pain in the ass to do so. ::sigh::
