I've been feeling my age this week, I think. Hard to tell, since I've never been any older, and I can't crawl around inside all the other forty-year-old's brains and see how they are really feeling, but there's a somewhat different quality to my current melancholy. This is beautiful writing, and I loved reading it. I wish I had thought of the "these kids have just been handed to me" trick when mine were younger; though I guess I had a similar one in reminding myself sometimes when things got really hairy (and I felt like I was the one helping make it so) that, in each moment, no matter what happened before, I can choose to make it better or worse ( ... )

We're also in that crappy time of the year when they days are getting longer, but not fast enough, and the weather is all over the place but mostly grey.

Thank you for sharing these thoughts with us. I had a melancholy moment or two over the weekend. We got together (my parents, my bro and his family, and us) to get family portraits taken as part of celebrating my parents' upcoming 50th anniversary. While we were all laughing and rearranging groups at the photographer's studio, I thought back to my paternal granparents' 50th anniversary, when we got that side of the family all together to get pictures taken, when bro and I were the grandkids in the shots. I started thinking about how now *my* parents were that oldest generation, and we were the middle tier, with the two young grandsons in the pictures ( ... )
