I always think of Christmas and New Years as the Big Winter Festival. I don't think it's a coincidence that just as winter is starting to get really shitty and boring we have this big celebration with colors and lights and concentration on things that are still green in the middle of the winter death. I think that it must fill a role for us psychologically, the original antidote against SAD.

Actually, hell, that is a damned good theory. Alright, the festivities stay, but the old white dude in red can still stay away from my house. I'm going to keep a fire lit under the chimney and a close eye on my shotgun.
