Character: Aerith Gainsborough
Series/Fandom: Final Fantasy VII
Original or Template version: Template.
Age: 21
Gender: Female
Species: Human.
Sexuality: Gender isn't important to Aerith; love is.
Appearance: Aerith is a pretty, sweet-faced girl; skin that is healthy and rosy around the cheeks, a small nose, thin lips, and slim eyebrows. She's slender, with a small waist, but child-bearing hips; her breasts are small, but evident. She cuts a very feminine picture with her figure, and she tends to wear hip-hugging dresses. Her colors of choice are pinks, reds, and whites. She doesn't like dreary colors; it's rare to find Aerith in the same blue as a bruise, or black, or even the warm brown of chocolate. It simply isn't her.
One of her most striking features are her eyes: an unmatched shade of viridian, with dark, long lashes. It stands out with her hair, which is brown; she tends to plait it into a high braid, tying the top with a scarlet ribbon and then simply using an elastic to keep it from unravelling. When unbraided, her hair reaches down to her waist in waves; done up, it reaches mid-back. Her bangs are rather unique; she sets aside two strands, which curl down to her collarbone, and the rest frames her face. She parts her bangs in the middle, and sometimes it curls around her cheekbones slightly, in wisps.
Personality: Aerith is, in general, a very sincere person with a strong heart and an undue kindness to most people. A flirt in some ways, Aerith likes to tease people she likes and talk, much more than she likes working and complaining. She takes most things in good humor, though prone to being sensitive and emotional, and most definitely compassionate. It is this last trait that seems to drive Aerith's every action: she tries to help others when she can, and when she can't, she keeps trying anyways. She's a nurturer and a very focused individual, with a lot of drive, and most people do tend to like her. After all, it's hard not to like someone who genuinely cares for every person she meets, to some extent.
However, there are a few flaws to her person, and not everything is a cup of tea with Aerith. Because of her self-sacrificing personality, Aerith can be flighty with her ideas and proceed on with things no matter the consequences, at a risk to herself. She can be secretive, keeping information to herself in the form of protection, and because she wants to protect, Aerith can also hold in her most personal of emotions. Though mostly an open person, if she wants to prevent someone from worrying about her, Aerith will shoulder the responsibility on her own.
Her lack of foresight about the future can also be a bit unnerving; Aerith tries to live each moment to the fullest, and her willingness to play around and be cute and flirt and laugh and talk and generally not act as serious as she should at some points can be annoying; despite this, her attitude should not be interpreted as frivolous, because when the need comes, Aerith can be very serious. Her selflessness can be grating, interpreted as self-serving even, but one of the best points of Aerith is...
She simply could care less. Aerith is Aerith, and she feels no need to compromise herself.
Abilities/Strengths: Aerith has a green thumb, and most of the things she plants grow despite the soil conditions. Her nurturing personality could be considered a great strength for others to feed off of, and she herself can be seen as a source of inspiration. She's also got an ability to heal others, something about her soothing touch that can't quite be explained with medicine and borders on a spiritual level. Aerith also hears 'voices', but she cannot exactly explain it.
Weaknesses: While her will is very strong, her body is not. The physically protected rather than the protector, the most Aerith can do is beat off attackers with a stick. The girl's got a lot of fight in her, but that doesn't always translate into strength. Also, her tendency to keep negative feelings inside can have a detrimental effect on her own spirit, and it's not surprising that Aerith is often tired during very hard times, though she shows a smile to everyone.
Despite having grown up in a bakery, Aerith is not very good at cooking.
History: Aerith grew up the youngest of three children, the second daughter to a stay-at-home mother (Ilfalna) and a father (Gast) with a passion for baking. The bakery is situated in the artisan district, because Aerith's mother has a fondness for painting, and the family lives near-by. It's a good house, with three bedrooms, a kitchen, two bathrooms, all the necessities of home, and Aerith grew up well-loved and very happy.
It was hard not to play favorites between her siblings. Her eldest brother, five years older than her and named Leis, was always the ringleader of the trio, much more forward and brash his two sisters. He always felt he was destined for greater things, the one always butting heads with his parents, and he was the one always eager to leave. Aerith idolized him, always following him around and rather forgetting the existance of her older sister. Leis was an adventure; Maeve, three years older, was much more bookish and as a result, the two sisters were rather estranged... a regret that Aerith would have when the two would find themselves the only babies left in the nest.
When she was very young, a trip to a lake left Aerith traumatized with an intense fear of drowning, thus making it impossible for her to learn to swim. Aerith doesn't like to talk about it.
The bakery was always a central part of the Gainsborough's lives. Both girls helped out in running it, not out of neccesity, but to create a sense of discipline in them; Leis shunned the bakery, consistent with his need to get away from his coddling family. Maeve was the one who could cook, and the more forward Aerith was the one who offered food samples to customers and worked the cash register. She enjoyed meeting so many interesting people, and her parents were happy to have the help.
But her true joy existed in their backyard. Formerly nothing but dirt and grass, a whimsy of Aerith ("This place needs more color," an eleven-year old Aerith had informed her parents one evening) transformed into a passion. Now bursting with color, the lush blooms are often candied and used as decorations for cupcakes and other treats the Gainsborough Bakery makes--something they have come to be known for. She always felt the 'earth' was talking to her, but this was a secret she kept to herself--despite that, it somehow leaked out and Aerith grew up dodging a few weird looks and few Turks with the intent of studying her. (Thankfully, she was never caught).
As with all children though, Aerith grew up. She realized there were more intriguing things than her flowers (imagine that!): things like boys and kisses and walks to her doorstep at night. She got her heart broken a few times, but she took it in stride, because she was only fifteen, sixteen, seventeen when those events occurred, and what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Still, she carries the remembrances heavy in her heart (especially one Zack Fair). She's a firm believer in destiny, and happy things will come to those who wait. After all, she's an avid reader of Shakespeare, and it seems that even when death comes, there's always something positive to come of it.
Now though, as with all fledgling adults, Aerith only rarely sees her brother Leis (he married shortly after she began college), and Maeve no longer works at the bakery but at a book store. It was around this time Aerith joined a renegade group called AVALANCH, which was rising up against an oppressive company called ShinRa and a man named Sephiroth. In this existance, Aerith did not die by Sephiroth's hands.
However, somewhere in her journey, she was sent to a new Template, and is here now, a touch confused, but it's really okay by Aerith's standards.
