The evolution of any system towards a higher state of quality requires three mechanisms: the creation of new patterns, the preservation of patterns of highest quality, and the destruction of patterns of lowest quality. Some people fear change so much that they put all of their conscious effort into defending a static belief system [usually inherited from their elders], thus guaranteeing that they will not evolve.

Figuring out which beliefs need to be destroyed partially requires a notion of quality, which within the individual has an intuitive component.

Most definitely. Some of the Hindu mystics did exactly that. Modern psychology would certainly have much to gain from the vast body of Eastern knowledge regarding the mind and consciousness.

I have rebuilt from the ground up so many times... The difficulty is in not let that old shit weasle it's way back in. It tricks you, masking itself in feelings of "familiarity" and "safety" when all they are is an ever expanding black hole.

I must say, I agree whole heartedly with your comparison to the legal system, but going blank has a good point. People like familiarity. We'd be in a much better place in the world if more westerners would come to grasp such eastern concepts. You won't find me holding my breath for such a day however...

The desire for familiarity is a natural manifestation of the preservation mechanism. Fear of change however disturbs the balance of the mechanisms.
