Okay. I can't do it. This list thing? No way in hell I can choose six songs to be my favorites. I'm not even sure I can name six favorite bands, which I think we must agree is easier. But everything is so different. To be honest, the new stuff I listen to doesn't really reach to me the same way the old stuff did. But the old stuff is, well, old ( Read more... )

Yeah, I suppose I should check some of that out . . . Amy's into bloc party and they seem okay, although I haven't latched onto them yet, we'll see. Arcade Fire's been on my playlist for a while but for some reason they just aren't speaking to me. I dunno. I do kind of like the fifties overtones they seem to project (Crown of Love) but I think the combination of the vocals and the strings is just kinda draggy. They're good and I recognize that, but I don't particularly like them.
I'll check out the new Spoon albums. Don't think I've tried them since like 99.
Likewise Decemberists . . . I've heard good things about their newest, although I must admit Colin Meloy half amuses me and half drives me out of my damn mind. Can't quite decide on them.
The Shining and Trail of Dead are also avenues I have not pursued, so thanks. For the lot of it. Now I have some direction to my exploration.

A lot of what I've been listening to lately falls outside your musical tastes, so I wonder if I should even mention it. I've been eating, breathing, and sleeping Jurassic 5, and if you're even slightly curious about hip-hop then they're the first ones you should investigate.

Otherwise, look at the new Kings of Leon album (Aha Shake Heartbreak), the new Beck (Guero), and the new Gorillaz (Demon Days).

Oh, also: this entry was a cop-out. There's no way I can name six favorite songs either, which is why I picked at random six songs I liked a lot and which I've been listening to a lot lately. It's a silly meme - don't take it so seriously.

I said it was a cop-out, didn't I? And I've spent the intervening time checking up on about a gazillion bands, so I'll maybe do "six songs I really like I didn't know two weeks ago" or something. I don't have to play by your rules.

Actually I did check out Jurassic 5, and I kinda like them. And it's not like I don't know anything about hip-hop, you know. I went to public school.

Seriously though, I like hip-hop . . . just not mainstream boring repetitive radioplay hip-hop, and not really enough to research it much, but I get cravings after hearing too much whiny imitation emo. And for this I cultivate a certain patch of my music landscape with stuff that, if not maybe dead-on classic hip-hop, has a lot of affinity to it. Frankly I'm pretty loose with genre, but you can check out the collection sometime if you want. My problem with it is that it all tends to sound much the same unless you get some serious rulebreaking in there.
Gorillaz I think have alienated me beyond repair (unless it's completely irresistable and it comes to get me ( ... )
