Some mornings, I wear a helmet, unlock my bicycle, turn on the front and tail lights and I am off. If I had not yet woken up, the ride would do the trick, for the risk of inattention.
Once I reach the canal, I watch egrets take off against the bright sun, water and trees, coffeeshops stirring their patrons through steaming cups, owners sit outside their hardware shops to wait for customers who might never appear, reminding me of older times and neighbouring lands.
Shots from the area, not on my route:
It is the ride home which gets tediously caught up in bullying traffic. Everyone seems to be in a mechanically greater hurry than I. Worse, when it rains and low-lying Jalan Besar floods, beware the splashes. Ahoy!
Bike commuter wannabes, I would recommend a two-piece raincoat, boots and sturdy locks.
