They had no idea that the statue was not the school's. They didn't know about the dedication. Yes, maybe it wasn't the best choice of a senior prank. But, do you think they would have done it if they knew what was going to happen? No, they didn't.
Vandalism is not acceptable no matter what they think. They were stupid. And now they have to face the fact that their actions have consequences. They need to learn that, since obviously they haven't yet.
First of all I think this whole thing was blown WAY out of proportion. The paint, as we were told by the store that sold it, was washable, it should have come off after a few minutes of being hosed down. That was how it worked when the students tested it on their own driveways. If we had known that it would not come off, there is no question that we wouldn't have done it. And while actions have consequences, they should also fit the actions. This was just a bad prank compounded by bad luck. But it is in no way what people have made it out to be, and it saddens me to see the seniors treated this way.
Finally, someone actually cares. I applaud you. Everyone else either spitefully says they had it coming or just laughs at their misfortune. This is a tragedy, and atleast I'm not the only one who sees it.
Yeah, it was not the best idea for a prank, but do you think we don't know that now? After the speech by Mr. Graham and the whole school looking down on us do you think we don't know that? I think that's consequences enough! And if it's not, the community service and their speech at assembly and the $20,000 is. But not letting them get a diploma at graduation... that's too far. Graduation is the culmination of all your years at school, this one or any other. And after all that they have done (all the Spirit Weeks, dances, charity drives, events), they don't get a diploma at graduation and that is just wrong. It just doesn't match up. The statue will be cleaned. Maybe not as easily as we had hoped, but it will return to normal and soon people won't even remember this. But the seniors only graduate once, and that can't be fixed. They'll look back at their graduation from the school that they spent so much time in and and they won't even be able to get their diploma there. You tell me if that's fair.
If they hadn't done it, they would be graduating. Vandalism, no matter how "funny" or innocent it might have been, is still vandalism. And now they'll (hopefully) learn to think before they act, because this taught them better than any other punishment could have. This pain will teach them a lesson they won't soon forget.
And excuse me, but I think that's plenty fair. This could have been considered a crime, good intentions or not, had the administration chosen to be hard on the seniors, and they could have faced criminal charges.
the seniors did it...they knew that what they were doin was stupid....i do feel bad for them but i mean come on they should at least use their brains for once
they're fools. in response to the "what would I say if it were me" jig, I'd have gone into it knowing fully what laws I was breaking and know not to get caught. I would know that if I did get caught, I could go to jail for it. Perhaps some of it was a bit overkill, but they should have prepared for that. They'll live with it, and they'll get on with their lives. High School graduation is only a small part of their life, no matter how important people make it out to be.
Yes it may seem small but it is a thing you only do once. And while they did deserve punishment of some kind, not letting them walk at graduation was unnecessary. They learned their lesson and would have anyway, but messing up the moment they've waited for for 14 years was just hurtful.

But they screwed up, and they have to deal with the consequences of their actions.
